Haight area nightclub with restaurant

1751 Social Club is a popular nightclub for young San Francisco professionals. The Club focuses on its nightclub / bar business, but also offers a restaurant. While the restaurant might be a good connected visit to the nightclub, we found the restaurant to be unexceptional.

We tried out the specials which included a American Cordon Bleu Chicken; Seafood Stew, and the flat iron steak. Our food was not of a quality in preparation for a high end restaurant. The chicken cordon bleu in particular was bland and dry. There was little or no cheese, and the dish had small pieces of bacon sprinkled around the side. The rice was also bland. We were informed that there were no modifications of any kind to the specials. The garden salad was primarily iceberg lettuce with packaged croutons and red onion rings-- a particular surprise of the food quality for a restaurant being lauded in the food press. Our companion noted that it was quite similar to a "chain pizza restaurant salad".

The service at the 1751 Social Club restaurant was not of a caliber for a high end restaurant. The waitress seemed unfocused on our needs; somewhat flustered; and not the type of professional found in restaurants of this kind. Our water glasses were rarely filled; and we were seated-- on a hot August evening -- next to a hot roaring fire that made us sweat profusely (see photo of fire w e were seated next to on August 7th). The table was severely unstable / wobbly which we fixed with a folded piece of cardboard.

The appetizer of a cheese / spinach dip with deep fried pita pieces was pretty good. The dessert of a warm blackberry cobbler with ice cream was the best part of the entire meal.

The bar service was also somewhat uninterested prior to our meal. Drink prices were $5 or more for drinks or beer pints with a limited beer selection.

In summary, 1751 Social Club in San Francisco seems to offer potential of a blend of nightclub and restaurant -- but at this point -- we'd stick with the nightclub. It's worth noting that some other websites and travel publications have lauded 1751 Social Club, but nothing in our visit seemed to justify these ratings.

Directions to 1751 Social Club:

Take 80W towards San Francisco, exit at 9th Street towards the civic center/Golden Gate Bridge. Turn left on Harrison St. Turn right on 9th Street, staying in the middle lane, 9th will become Larkin. Make the first left onto Grove. You will pass City Hall on your right. Make a right on to Franklin and an immediate left onto Fulton. Continue on Fulton about 15 blocks. 1751 social club will be on your left just before Fulton intersects with Masonic.
