Globe Restaurant

The Globe Restaurant is an top-notch, intimate restaurant worth a visit, located in Jackson Square's interesting historic district, After our visit, we would place it in San Francisco's top 10 restaurants. The Globe takes food very seriously. Their handwritten menu (updated daily/weekly?) is filled with flavorful treats. Located in a former livery stable, the interior is exposed brick with large original paintings reminicent of Keith Haring.

Best of all, the Globe is open until 1 a.m. and is a far cry from the food normally available at that time. Globe is frequented by professionals in the food industry after their own restaurants close. The two young chefs, Joseph Manzare (formerly of Spago) and Mary Klingbeil are artistes of fine food.

At our dining experience, we sampled the salmon on pasta with watercress ($19) and the pork chop. Both had excellent flavor. The salmon was not overcooked and was very tender; the pork chop lean and flavored well also. We began our meal with a baby greens salad ($6.50) and complimented the dishes with a parmesan risotto ($6) which was excellent. The baby greens were accompanied by goat cheese and served in an artful pottery glazed crock.

To complete the meal, we had a nectarine cake, baked fresh in a skillet and topped with ice cream ($6). Rarely does a restaurant present itself with fine service, great food, not wallet destroying prices, and a romantic atmosphere. The Globe should not be missed.

As you might expect, this smaller restaurant is not hurting for business. You will need reservations and need to make them well in advance.
