RECOMMENDED FOR BUDGET TRAVELERS SEEKING BASIC ACCOMMODATIONS

Ruth writes, "We traveled as a family group, booking four rooms. Two of the rooms were in the centre of the hotel, over looking pipes and fire escapes. These rooms were small, dark and stuffy. We asked for a change of room they were fully booked so we got one the next day. One of the rooms was at the front of the hotel over looking Chinatown. Light, airy room, intresting view, slightly noisy. The room on the 6th floor, which had been recently refurbished, had an ajoining sitting/bedroom which was ideal for a 15yr old. Lower floors rooms were in need of some refurbishment. The shower rooms/toilets small and needed to be upgraded. The bed and rooms were clean. Staff were polite. Location ideal, wouldn't hesitate to re-book but would request street faceing rooms or above the 4th floor. After looking around this was a very good price for June/July."

Helen writes, "We selected the Grant Plaza Hotel to stay in and found it an absolutely brilliant choice for a budget hotel. The room was tiny but cozy with a great view across the skyscrapers. The towels were changed every day which I found pretty impressive! It felt really safe all the time and was close to North Beach which was great for going out to on the night. All in all would like to recommend this hotel if you want to travel cheap but don't fancy a hostel."

"I expected a cheap dive, but I got much more than I expected. First, it's in a great location----right in the heart of Chinatown. You are seconds away from the best Chinese food in San Francisco, steps to shopping, and a very short walk to the cable car stop. Regarding the hotel itself: Immaculate room, small but nicely decorated, comfortable bed, new TV, scrupulously clean bathroom (tiny shower, too small to shave your legs in, but I could live with it.) Staff was friendly as could be. I give this place an A on the A-F scale for cheap hotels. I plan on staying there again."

Recommended by L.S., "for around $70 per night you can be situated between Union Square (yuck), the Financial District (better), and Chinatown (a whole lotta fun)." Small and simply furnished rooms near Chinatown -- well maintained. On a busy intersection/street and walking distance to Union Square and North Beach. Parking with in-out privileges is $14.50 additional per day.

S. concurs, "I just wanted to add something to the favorable comments concerning Grant Plaza on your web site. It is also a very good deal for families. You can get two adjoining rooms for a price less than a single room at many of the hotels in the area."

P. writes from the U.K., "I had a very nice clean, but basic room. The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet, which is amazing considering the location. The staff were polite and friendly. However, the room had a window which looked into other room encircling the center of the hotel and the televisions had very poor reception. But, for $52 per night, these things are easily overlooked."
