San Francisco's Bed & Breakfast Reviews A fun alternative to a hotel might be a bed and breakfast. Typically with much more personal service and advice on what to do, B&B's offer a way to see San Francisco in a whole new way. Make sure you ask about parking if you have a car. Also, make sure the neighborhood is one you want to stay in. I'll give some neighborhood facts here. Prices are a good relative guide. Let me know your experiences at these B&B's. All include breakfast with stay, but it may be served early... Note that you definitely get what you pay for at these places. 1914 English Hotel - 24 rooms Price Quote (estimated): $83 - $235 / median of $115(+14% SF City Hotel Tax) CS. writes, "The Edward-II rooms are very cozy and sunny with lots of stained glass. The bedroom was wicker, and the bathroom was big enough for two with plenty of space for our clothes. The kitchen was roomy and had the things you would need to cook, but with so many wonderful places to try -- why bother! We never take a car, so parking was not an issue. The staff is very pleasant and helpful. They gave us information about the bus lines and with a $10 Muni pass for three days, we could go any where we wanted." G.M. writes, The Edward-II building is very cozy and we felt safe and comfortable. We wondered "Why can't we stay here for our entire trip?" We liked it and the staff was very nice. The building is a 3-Story Victorian and has a lot of charm. It is more quaint than elegant and has a lot of stained glass throughout the Inn. Our room was away from the street (less noise) and was small, but cozy. The inn seemed in appearance to have been recently refurbished and the carpeting seemed relatively new. Our room was pleasantly decorated (wicker and brass bed) and the bathroom was relatively large and all of the fixtures were new but were styled to keep the "Victorian Inn" effect going. The Inn was very clean and pleasant. It's not the Ritz, but we weren't looking for that either. Breakfast is continental (bagels-yum, juice and coffee) and it is "self-served" in a cute little parlor area. The best way to sum up the the Edward II Inn would be to call it, "Petite and Cute". GT from New Jersey agrees, "We stayed at the Edward II B&B from Feb 18-21 of this year. We were thrilled with the place. The location is great. They have just a few reserved parking spaces on-site. However, a parking lot across Lombard usually has space available. The room we had was charming. It was not one of their expensive suites, but it still had plenty of room. The bathroom especially was cavernous and beautifully decorated. Their breakfast was much more than we expected - "continental breakfast" is typically a roll and coffee, but the spread they had for guests included wonderful pastries, bagels, toppings, muffins, juices - it was a huge meal. We were delighted with the atmosphere at the Edward II, the staff was friendly, everything was tidy and very pleasant. We highly recommend this B&B." Red
Victorian B&B - $100-$150 / median $125 Shannon writes, "I stayed in The Red Victorian B&B this past May while I was in San Francisco and found it to be absolutely delightful. The rooms were very clean and well kept, and each had themes related to SF. Enough of them had their own baths that I didn't have any trouble getting into the shared baths except when the friend I was traveling with wanted it first. A lovely breakfast was provided, it was only a block or so from Golden Gate Park, and I didn't see rates much lower anywhere in the city. Sami Sunchild is a charming hostess, and I would wholeheartedly recommend the Red Vic to anyone travelling to the area." Chateau Tivoli $140-$290 / $215 median for rooms with private bath. Victorian Inn On the Park - rooms $139-$355 "We spent our honeymoon here and were pretty disappointed overall. There was a lot of dust, flapping wallpaper, and general mustiness, for one thing, and the staff wasn't nearly as friendly as those of other B&Bs we've stayed at. We stayed in the Belvedere room, which they told me when I booked the room was great for honeymooners, but other than the private balcony overlooking the park, there wasn't much else to recommend it. And for the price we paid, it was an awfully small room (and we're used to B&Bs). In general, I think there are probably much better B&Bs to stay in in the San Francisco area." 301 Lyon Street
Bocks B&B $45-$80 Golden Gate Hotel $95 - $165 / $22 for parking Tippi writes, "A quiet, clean, cozy Bed & Breakfast. Staff is friendly and efficient. Lots of fluffy towels. Right by downtown tourist area and subway system, numerous shops and eateries. Slight drawback is you have to walk up one steep block, almost 40 degrees slope - might not be easy for the elderly. Otherwise highly recommended." Jessica writes, "This B&B is absolutely charming! The building is four stories tall with an exposed antique elevator. The rooms are furnished with antique & wicker furniture. Rooms are available with full baths or shared baths. All rooms are impeccable. The historic photographs that line the walls add to the old world charm of this quaint little inn. You will feel quite at home when the innkeepers, John & Renate, hand you a key to the front door. You are greeted by a golden retriever named Humphrey. If you're lucky you will catch a glimpse of the house cat, Captain Nemo. Breakfast consists of warm toasted croissants, just about the best cup of coffee in the city, and fresh OJ. Afternoon tea & cookies are also served. Location, location, location! This B&B is conveniently located at the bottom of Nob Hill. The Powell & Mason cable cars are just at the end of the block. Union Square is a 10-minute walk around the corner. There is a parking garage directly across the street, which also offers a rental car service. I look forward to my next visit to The Golden Gate Hotel. This B&B alone will bring me back to San Francisco." Hayes Valley Inn G.G. recommends, "The Hayes Valley Inn is very clean, homey and inexpensive. I booked my mother there and she liked it (they also have a senior discount). Rooms are between $76 and $105. Check it out..."
