Warden's House... The Good Life
Warden's House
Ruins |
The warden's house had incredible
panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay. From its construction in 1929 until the
house burned down in 1970, the warden's house's wonderful windows looked out to
freedom. Designed in Mission Revival style, the home had 17 large rooms. The
windows had sweeping views of the Golden Gate and San
Francisco lights. James Johnston was the first of four federal wardens to occupy the
home. The terraces held ornamental gardens, and a greenhouse was used to grow
colorful plants. The building was engulfed by fire in 1970 and now stands in ruins
as shown above. Red valerian flowers now carpet the building and the rose garden
lives on today... |
